The camaraderie the team enjoyed despite a less-than-ideal season-long situation that equated to many forfeits was all the more evident, with senior captains Joe Simolacaj, Ben Breitel, and Jeff Dempsey leading the way.

swimthumbThe Rye boys’ swimming and diving team ended their regular season competition in a meet against Mamaroneck January 31. Although it was close – each Garnet swam to a personal best, showing great improvement from earlier meets – Mamaroneck had more depth and secured the victory. Rye finished the season with a 3-5 record.

sp-wavethumbThe Rye YMCA Wave Ryeder swim team started their season off right, winning their first meet of the season at home against the Tarrytown YMCA November 20.  “The team swam well with several exciting races,” said Head Coach Kate Tiedemann. The Wave Ryeders returned to action December 2, competing successfully against the Greenwich Boys and Girls Club. They are training hard for a dual meet December 18 against the Mt. Vernon and Yonkers YMCA’s.

But, things have not gone the way the Garnets might have envisioned them. Rye’s main problem is that they cannot fill four weight classes, which gives opposing teams a built-in 24-point advantage due to forfeits.

The Wildcats ripped through the tourney hosts 61-31 in the first round, and then defeated Staten Island Academy, the reigning NYSAIS State champs, 65-60 in the championship.
