Patriotism was on display at Milton School January 25. Fifth graders created art, researched famous American landmarks and people, and sang patriotic songs for the Art Across America presentation. The program was created by second-year art teacher Kristin Castaldi. To top things off, Milton PTO members provided a “native” luncheon for the students that included patriotic fare like apple pie and ice cream.

Contrary to reports of private school students facing a much tougher early-admissions game this year, nearly 90% of School of the Holy Child seniors who applied early decision/early action were admitted to their first-choice school. Among them are: Brown, Bucknell, Cornell, Elon, Fordham, Georgetown, Lehigh, MIT, NYU, Northeastern, Notre Dame, Oberlin, Rhode Island School of Design, St. Andrews, Vanderbilt, and Villanova.

Rye High School seniors Molly Jordan and Alexander Mun have been selected as candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program. The program recognizes some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors, who are selected based on their accomplishments in areas such as academics, the arts, leadership, and involvement in school and the community. They must also represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in America’s youth.

Students at Daniel Warren were recently given a mission they were all too keen to accept. Although it might seem impossible to get first and second graders, as well as kindergarteners, to appraise storybook illustrations with a discriminating eye, then vote for the best one and actually keep it a secret, they passed the test with flying colors!

It may be winter, but the spring watch is already on at Osborn School, as students prepare plans and plants for April sowing in the school garden. Right now, the garlic cloves planted in September are coming along nicely. Apparently, all it takes to grow your own garlic is to plant an unpeeled clove flat side down and wait for spring.

Rye Neck students have turned the tables on their teachers and are educating adults about environmental sustainability through the Middle School’s DoRight Leadership Corps. As part of the district’s Independent Learner Program, the youth action group promotes sustainable practices in the community and conducts energy audits for local businesses.

The Rye High School Student Council took a new direction in its attempt to involve the student body in more activities and, so far, it’s working.
The Council got the ball rolling by creating a class contest, in which the four grades compete against one other in various challenges.

Rye Country Day Headmaster Scott Nelson, students, faculty, and parent members of the environmental committee were on hand for the unveiling of the school’s new solar system November 4. The 24-kilowatt system consists of 96 solar panels, the environmental equivalent of recycling 450,000 cans of soda, planting 1,600 trees, and taking three cars off the road this year. The system was installed by Mercury Solar, which is headquartered in Port Chester.

School of the Holy Child’s Gryphon Players present “Metamorphoses” November 11 and 12. Based on the myths of Ovid, “Metamorphoses” was written and originally directed by Mary Zimmerman. This highly acclaimed play is the first production of the season for the Gryphon Players, who will put on “Annie” in February. The popular Shakespeare in the Garden program returns to the school’s Alumnae Garden in late May.

Milton School second graders did a segment on sea creatures earlier this month. Students in Mrs. Ridley and Mrs. Taddeo’s classes walked to Oakland Beach, and, with the help of Rye Nature Center staff, collected and learned about silver backs (minnows), green and hermit crabs, snails, pipefish, sea stars, and even puffer fish.
