We decided to stick it to Santa this year. Christmas is so hectic, and we all needed a little down time, so we did the unthinkable – we went to Turks and Caicos on December 23. I’ve felt guilty about this since booking the flights. I mean no Christmas Eve turkey to cook and clean up after, no Christmas day roast to burn? Who do I think I am? What mom is relaxed over Christmas? Well, I’ll tell you, it took some doing.

Officially it has been nearly three weeks since the last painter took his ladder and brushes and departed and we could call our house our own (although he did come back today for touch-ups) after Hurricane Irene. It took a village of workers and friends, and a lot of work, but it is finally done. The threshold we cross is our own.

Thanksgiving Day. What’s not to like? Even turkey, which most days tastes like salted paper towel, is delectable. Normally bland turnips turn into tantalizing tidbits for the taste buds. There is no tree to purchase or trim, no frantic trips to town to buy Uncle Ralph a tie that we know he will never wear, and no marathon wrapping sessions in the attic. It’s neither too cold nor too hot, and some orange, red, and yellow leaves remain on the trees.
