Joan Holt Garrity passed away at her home in Redding, Conn., on July 4, 2017.

Born and raised in Rye, she was the youngest of six children. The Garrity family lived on Forest Avenue until 1982.

Joey, as she was called, was often thought of as the quiet one, but her large circle of friends remembers her quick wit, brilliant humor, and warm spirit.

She graduated from St. Margaret’s School in Roanoke, Va. and then continued her education at Bradford College in Massachusetts. After college, she worked in corporate accounting for General Foods in White Plains, and later for LaBatts-USA in Darien, CT.

For the past twelve years, Ms. Garrity worked at Glen Gate Landscape and Design in Wilton, Conn. She was beloved by her colleagues who will miss her “bright and diligent presence.”

A longtime and active member of AA, she worked hard on her own sobriety, and sponsored others in their journeys to recovery. Her family is deeply grateful to the many AA friends who joined with Joan in her remarkable and loving transformation.

Her devotion to animals drew her to ROAR animal shelter in Ridgefield Conn., where she was a steadfast volunteer for many years.

Joan Garrity is survived by her siblings: Page Lowry of Wilmington, N.C., Sheila Frantz of Boulder, Colo., Adair Garis of Wilton, Conn., Norah Cross of Rehoboth, Mass., and Devin Garrity of Sarasota, Fla.; as well as by her many adoring nieces and nephews.

Donations in Joan Garrity’s memory may be made to ROAR, Ridgefield Operation Animal Rescue, 45 South Street, Ridgefield, CT 06877.
