Resurrection Holds a Double Celebration for Monsignor Boyle

– By Victoria Dillon

Resurrection Church held a large celebration June 6 for their beloved pastor, Monsignor Patrick J. Boyle, who was being honored for two special reasons. It was the 45th anniversary of his 1965 ordination into the priesthood, as well as his 70th birthday. More than 700 parishioners attended a celebration Mass and the party that followed on the new playing field at Resurrection School.

During the Mass, Msgr. Boyle thanked many key people in the parish for helping to make the Resurrection Church and School the powerful force in the community it is today. He also made an emotional address to thank the many people who helped him during his treatment and hospitalization after he was diagnosed with cancer almost a year ago.

“What fun it is to be a priest,” said Msgr. Boyle, emphasizing his love of his chosen calling. “What a wonderful opportunity the priesthood is to help people and what an honor it is to serve God with so many wonderful priests.”

The Mass ended with a standing ovation. The celebration continued under the tent where Powell Catering and Post Road Market provided a BBQ lunch and the Cunningham Brothers Band played live music and a few Irish jigs in tribute to the monsignor’s Irish heritage.

At the party, Resurrection parishioner, Councilwoman Suzanna Keith read a special proclamation signed by Mayor Douglas French. Other City officials in attendance were Councilman Joseph Sack and Rye Police Commissioner William Connors.

Eileen Lennon, Parish Office Manager, assisted by a devoted team of parishioners, was instrumental in organizing this celebration as well as another identical event for 500 of Msgr. Boyle’s family and friends held at Resurrection the following weekend.

“He has been an important part of so many people’s lives,” said Lennon, who has known Msgr. Boyle for over 40 years. “He has been central to our lives and our entire family’s as well. He is a real people person with a great sense of humor and he has changed thousands of people’s lives for the better with his strong message of faith.”
