Woman Suffers Severe Eye Injury From Drive-By Egging
Hope Reeser was walking her dog along Milton Road June 11, at 12:30 a.m., when an unknown offender threw an egg at her at great velocity from an oncoming vehicle. The egg hit Reeser square in the right eye. Reeser was forced to make a trip to the hospital, where it was discovered her eye had suffered serious trauma, including scratches and tears. An ophthalmologist was called in to remove pieces of shell that were lodged in the eye.
“I saw the car coming, but didn’t realize what was happening until it was too late,” said Reeser, a retired Rye Country Day School teacher. “It hurt so much, I immediately thought there was blood coming from my eye.”
According to Lt. Joseph Verille, the crime is considered second-degree assault. “The egg was a dangerous weapon that caused a serious physical injury,” he said. “Obviously, this type of action is not condoned. Unfortunately, we don’t have a description of the perpetrator.”
Since the incident, Reeser has had to make daily trips to her doctor and is now on four different medications to treat her eye. She is under strict orders to not drive, read, pick anything up off the floor, or walk her ailing dog. Making matters more difficult, Reeser has been the primary caretaker of her husband Bob, who is on dialysis.
After she was hit with the egg, Reeser made her way to her neighbor’s residence, the home of City Councilwoman Catherine Parker and husband David Walker. The couple walked Reeser back to her house, called the police, and accompanied the injured senior to the hospital.
“Sometimes kids have no idea the harm they can cause with what they think is an innocent prank,” said Councilwoman Parker. “But there can be dire consequences.”
Although Lt. Verille stated the egging was an isolated incident, Reeser is not so sure.
“I’m afraid to walk my dog at night now,” the victim said. “Kids are constantly at the foot of Rye Beach Avenue late at night and throwing beer cans out of their windows. We need more police patrol in the area at those hours. I don’t want to take action against anyone, but I would hate to see this happen to someone else.”
