The following summarizes reports filed at Rye Police headquarters from 1/27 to 2/15. The information does not include final court or other actions.
1/27: Purchase Street office worker claimed her boss became angry when she asked him to wait while her assistant answered a business call; he then threw a pair of scissors in her direction. Subsequently, she stated offender had been telling witnesses not to talk to police. Sworn statements taken.
1/27: Gramercy Avenue resident reported a (possibly Hispanic) male in a full-size white van stopped to talk to son on his way home from Midland School. Child ran away and called 911. Area search for suspicious vehicle proved negative. Youth Officer alerted.
1/27: Mead Place resident turned in Lexus keychain with two keys on it, found on Orchard Avenue. Placed in Property Locker #2.
1/28: Downed utility wire in woods near Apawamis golf course caused death of squirrel, which in turn attracted six-year-old black lab belonging to Rockridge Road resident. Dog electrocuted, woman severely shocked. Traffic closed at Locust Avenue and Glendale Road.
1/28: Purchase Street restaurant reported drunk customer refusing to pay. Patron transported to Greenwich Hospital for alcohol poisoning.
1/29: Three Rye high school students reported harassment by known party via cell phone calls and texting. School district officials aware of situation. Youth Referral Form filed.
1/30: Forest Avenue resident reported daughter’s Blue Hartrock Specialized bicycle stolen from Rye Middle School rack. Family later discovered youth riding stolen bike near Rye Rec Park. Party claimed to have received bike from friend “who found it beside of the road.” A friend with a hacksaw, maybe.
1/30: Central Avenue homeowner called saying smoke alarm had been going off for 45 minutes in neighborhood. Noise tracked to home with front door wide open; nanny trying to clear smoke coming from fireplace by waving dishtowel. Flue not opened before fire was lit. Sleeping children upstairs okay. Neighbor agreed to stay with nanny until parents arrived home.
1/31: Visitor to Greenwood Union Cemetery reported cremation wall split in half, exposing two urns. Several attempts made to contact caretaker.
2/1: Trumbull, Conn. man who uses Westchester Medical Group’s Theall Road parking lot to hand daughter over to ex-wife, living in Dix Hills, after weekend visitations, reported meeting ex-wife’s father instead. Older man proceeded to throw bags and boxes against Toyota with daughter inside. Sudden acceleration of Toyota occurred as man drove quickly away. Will seek order of protection in family court.
2/1: Rye resident reported husband missing for ten days. She and brother-in-law turned over text messages indicating missing man may harm self.
2/1: Responding to call, police discovered Purchase Street man in bed, dead from apparent gunshot wound to head. Medical Examiner’s Office removed body. Single-shot Derringer, unregistered, found and removed from premises.
2/2: Pondview Road resident called to say she threw resident alien card in garbage.
2/3: Counterfeit $5 bill brought to Police HQ by Boston Post Road resident. Placed in Detective Division evidence bag.
2/3: Gray Honda Accord observed at Midland and Peck Avenues with expired (5/09) registration sticker. Search of vehicle turned up clear bag with marijuana. Fairfield driver arrested: another thoughtless pothead who should have renewed his registration.
2/3: Park Avenue resident reported receiving harassing phone call threatening self as well as children. Sworn statement taken.
2/4: Mamaroneck man reported losing front license plate while driving “at some point.” Report slip given to driver.
2/5: Cowles Avenue man arrested for driving black Chevy pickup with cracked windshield and defective brake light without seatbelt. Arrested, summonsed, processed.
2/5: Black leather Givenchy wallet found at Rye train station. No U.S. contact information. Finder contacted someone who works with wallet’s owner, left message that wallet was at Rye Police HQ. No further action taken.
2/6: Unregistered Green Toyota Camry stopped at Boston Post Road and Central Avenue. Driver admitted he not only had no license, he’d never had one. Not the thing to say. You know what happened next.
2/6: White Toyota Yaris with Florida plates, stolen in New York City, discovered parked in front of Coldwell Banker. NYSPIN confirmed “active stolen”; pawnshop receipt on seat showed named party pawning goods on 1/16. Car secured for prints; NYC stolen property division informed.
2/6: Stop sign found dumped at Marshlands Conservatory. Visual check showed sign it to be unlike other Rye stop signs. Also, no nearby intersection missing its stop sign. “Migratory” sign removed by Westchester County Police.
2/7: Palisade Place resident with order of protection against her granddaughter called to say teenager was agitated and becoming verbally abusive. Officer warned girl that violation of order could mean jail time, and urged grandmother to call again if situation arose.
2/7: Four burglaries on Walker Avenue: Alarm company alert said back door was ajar. Broken music box ornament discovered on floor of master bedroom. Owners returned to fill out report. K-9 dog Buc tracked offender’s scent next door to empty, for-sale house. Rear window screens were bent up, dirty fingerprints on rear door. No entry appeared made. Meanwhile, homeowner up block returned home to find house broken into. Window over kitchen sink pried open; husband’s silver-blue Raymond Weil wristwatch taken. Then neighbor across street returned home to find mud on basement floor and safe in closet broken into. All residents filed depositions for detectives.
2/8: Rye Country Day School student from Stamford observed leaving grounds five minutes after start of school day, saying she’d left books on train. Later, parents called in distress; Missing Person report filed. Westchester County helicopter, canine unit, Rye FD personnel called in to search school environs at night. No child. At midnight, father walked into Police HQ to say child was in Boston Medical Center Emergency Room, uninjured, and was going to pick her up.
2/11: Possibly rabid raccoon under deck of Kirby Lane North residence. Raccoon lured out and dispatched by police Sgt., disposing body for rabies analysis.
2/14: Erratic driving at 5 a.m. on Purchase Street. Officer asked, “Where are you coming from?” “Norwalk.” Where are you going? “Norwalk.” How many have you had? “Just two, I won’t B.S. you.” BAC level didn’t lie, either: 0.24, three times greater than inebriation. Arrested, four summonses served.
2/15: Keane Court resident reported coyote attack on dogs in back yard. Heroic dog defended other, older canine until family could bring them into house. Other coyotes seen in distance. Sworn statement completed.
