Book Groups
The Rye Free Reading Room invites reading fans to join in two book discussions in August. The Thursday Afternoon Book Group will meet August 5 at 1:15 p.m. to talk about “Zeitoun” by Dave Eggers, a true account of one family’s experiences during Hurricane Katrina.
Friday Morning Book Café will meet August 6 at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments and a discussion of “The Shack” by William P. Young, a book that asks the question: Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain? Copies of both books are available at the Circulation Desk.
Green Home Exhibit
Come see what true environmental stewardship in your home would look like at The Rye Garden Club's “Home Green Home Conservation Exhibit” on view at the Rye Nature Center through August 27. The exhibit consists of a fully furnished dollhouse and yard made by the club’s seven-member Conservation Committee to demonstrate green building and decorating techniques, water run-off mitigation and practices that can be incorporated into daily life to conserve resources and promote sustainability.
Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the home and property with the help of a pamphlet. “Home Green Home” earned the GCA Marion Thompson Fuller Brown Conservation Award for “an outstanding conservation exhibit of exceptional educational and visual merit which increases the public's knowledge and awareness of our environment.”
Deal or No Deal?
Times have changed and so has the negotiation around salary and additional benefits. Join Lives In Transition at the Rye Presbyterian Church August 5 from 7-9 p.m., for an informative evening with Donna Held, President of Career Techniques, to gain more insight into what it takes to close the deal.
Held has 25 years of experience assisting people in negotiating the best possible offers. After the presentation there will be time for questions, followed by networking. This event is free. RSVP at livesintransition@gmail.com.
The Big Read
Enjoy books on the National Endowment for the Arts “Big Read” list of classic and recent titles at the Rye Free Reading Room. The project brings together libraries and cultural institutions across the country in an effort to restore reading to the center of American culture. Big Read books and CDs are on display at the library and a full list of titles is available at www.ryelibrary.org.
