An American battle flag recently flown over Iraq will highlight Rye Memorial Day ceremonies Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m. on the Village Green, reports John LaGattuta, Rye American Legion Post 128 Commander.
The smoke-tinged banner presented to the Legion by Rye Girl Scout Troop 2459 was sent them by Rye’s own Captain Paul Marcato in appreciation of the scouts collecting and sending his troops heartening candies and treats. Captain Marcato of the 1st Cavalry Aviation Regiment flew the flag in combat over Baghdad. The flag will hang in City Hall.
Attorney John Alfano will receive the Rye Post’s Americanism Award for his extensive community service.
Legion Resolutions of Appreciation will be awarded to Susan Morison, past director and longtime volunteer of the Rye Historical Society, who retired this year as City Clerk, and to Lucille DiGiorgio, who retired after thirty years of library service at the Rye Free Reading Room and Milton School.
The three Rye High School winners of the Legion’s Memorial Day essay contest will be announced. They’ll share in $1,000 in cash prizes donated by Jim Kingery, Rye Ford Subaru president. The winning essay appears on our website, www.ryerecord.com.
Rye Mayor Steve Otis and other dignitaries will speak. Resurrection student Lumoal Lim will deliver the Gettysburg Address. Eagle Scouts Joseph Graham and Christopher Reifsnyder will receive commendations. Robin Phelps Latimer will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the names of those lost in battle will be read.

Memorial wreaths will be placed, Rye clergy will offer prayers and Taps will be sounded by a Rye High School student. Poppies made by disabled vets will be for sale by the Rye Legion Women’s Auxiliary.
