A Perfect Day in a Bronx Neighborhood

 

potsthumbThirty years to the day after serving its first meal, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to unveil the newly expanded headquarters of POTS (Part of the Solution) in the Bronx. Rye residents and Resurrection Church members have been a big part of the Bronx soup kitchen from the start, and they were there for the celebration January 6.

legionthumbRye Recreation was the honored setting for a swinging Rye American Legion Post 128 Christmas party December 15. Assemblyman George Latimer did a stand-up job harmonizing with his vocally gifted wife Robin. John Carolin kept the tunes coming.  

   

Putting on a Happy Face

 

solethumbOn December 18, a group of Sole Ryeders families helped prepare and serve brunch for more than 70 guests in support of the Pinwheel Project’s partnership with the Ronald McDonald House in Valhalla. The guests were families whose children are receiving care from the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital and others who are ‘alumni’ of this Ronald McDonald House. Singing and gift giving were the order of the day.

   

SPRYE is Truly Spry

 

SPRYE is off to a running start. Rye’s aging-in-place organization to help older adults stay in their homes has already signed up 50 dues-paying households with 70 members since starting operations at the beginning of October. Its progress is on track with the pace achieved by similar organizations in neighboring communities — 180 households in Bronxville’s Grammaton Village after three years, and Mamaroneck’s At Home on the Sound with 105 households after 18 months.

   

JP Morgan/Chase Continues to Grow

 

At the close of the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, total deposits in the eight banks in Rye grew to $1.2 billion, a 10% increase from a year ago, according to records recently released by FDIC. Three-quarters of that gain came from one bank, JP Morgan/Chase, which increased its share of deposits from 36.9% to 40.3%.

birdthumbThe Committee to Save the Bird Homestead will present the Beauty and Power of Trees, a nature walk on the Meeting House and Bird Homestead grounds December 30 at 3 p.m. Naturalist Alison Beall will lead the program. Now that the leaves are down, the structure of trees can be seen more clearly.

State Awards $250,000 Restoration: Grant to Bird Homestead Group

crustthumbWhen the new owners of Upper Crust Bagel, on the corner of Locust and Purchase, took over a few months ago, their first step was to give the place a good cleaning. “We power-washed everything,” says Joe Mancuso, a longtime Port Chester native who now lives down the road in Rye Brook. “Then we repainted and repaired so that our customers now feel the surroundings are as fresh as the bagels.”

Allstate and Fresh Green Light Team Up to Combat Distracted Driving

 

allstatethumbRalph Borsella and his Rye Allstate staff talked about the dangers of texting while driving during a recent visit to Port Chester High School, as part of the agency’s national “X the TXT” campaign. Students added their thumbprints to an oversized banner as symbols of their promises not to text and drive, and pledged to put their cell phones down and focus on the road. The event was organized by the Port Chester Cares Community Coalition and Open Door Family Medical Centers.

   

St. Vincent’s to Launch Crisis Response and Prevention Team

 

St. Vincent’s Hospital Westchester, a division of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, announces the appointment of Abby Wasserman M.D., and Sally Eaton, LCSW-R as leaders of its new Crisis Response and Prevention Team, set to begin in early December. Saint Joseph’s recently was selected to receive a Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health grant to develop the team following a competitive proposal process.
