A Restorative Gift from Good Friends
The community has watched in wonder over the past year as the historic but long-vacant Meeting House on Milton Road has been slowly but meticulously repaired. In true preservation spirit, on February 4, the Friends of Rye Meeting House presented a check to the Committee to Save the Bird Homestead to restore the mid-19th century building’s windows.

A Big Green Holiday Hit
The Ceres Garden Club reports that their holiday sale, held December 3, was the most successful to date. The Club thanks all the people who purchased wreaths, greenery arrangements, and baked goods. The merchants of Rye were especially helpful this year in placing a large number of pre-orders for the decorated wreaths.

Anthony and Carly D’Arpino’s investment in the old Washington Mutual Bank on Halstead Avenue in Harrison is paying off. In September, after a major transformation of the space, they opened Harrison Wine Vault. The attractive and expansive shop is filled with fine wine and spirits and has fast become the toast of the community.

Welcome Home, Soldier
Max DiEdwards, 22, returned last month to Camp Pendleton Marine Base in California, after a seven-month tour in Afghanistan. His son Dominic, who was born in May, was there with his girlfriend Didi Cruz to welcome him back.
A Perfect Day in a Bronx Neighborhood
Thirty years to the day after serving its first meal, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to unveil the newly expanded headquarters of POTS (Part of the Solution) in the Bronx. Rye residents and Resurrection Church members have been a big part of the Bronx soup kitchen from the start, and they were there for the celebration January 6.
An End-of-Year Salute
Rye Recreation was the honored setting for a swinging Rye American Legion Post 128 Christmas party December 15. Assemblyman George Latimer did a stand-up job harmonizing with his vocally gifted wife Robin. John Carolin kept the tunes coming.
Putting on a Happy Face
On December 18, a group of Sole Ryeders families helped prepare and serve brunch for more than 70 guests in support of the Pinwheel Project’s partnership with the Ronald McDonald House in Valhalla. The guests were families whose children are receiving care from the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital and others who are ‘alumni’ of this Ronald McDonald House. Singing and gift giving were the order of the day.
SPRYE is Truly Spry
SPRYE is off to a running start. Rye’s aging-in-place organization to help older adults stay in their homes has already signed up 50 dues-paying households with 70 members since starting operations at the beginning of October. Its progress is on track with the pace achieved by similar organizations in neighboring communities — 180 households in Bronxville’s Grammaton Village after three years, and Mamaroneck’s At Home on the Sound with 105 households after 18 months.
JP Morgan/Chase Continues to Grow
At the close of the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, total deposits in the eight banks in Rye grew to $1.2 billion, a 10% increase from a year ago, according to records recently released by FDIC. Three-quarters of that gain came from one bank, JP Morgan/Chase, which increased its share of deposits from 36.9% to 40.3%.

The Committee to Save the Bird Homestead will present the Beauty and Power of Trees, a nature walk on the Meeting House and Bird Homestead grounds December 30 at 3 p.m. Naturalist Alison Beall will lead the program. Now that the leaves are down, the structure of trees can be seen more clearly.

State Awards $250,000 Restoration: Grant to Bird Homestead Group
Through a competitive statewide process, the not-for-profit Committee to Save the Bird Homestead was awarded a $250,000 New York State matching grant last week for restoration work at the Meeting House and Bird Homestead.
