New Waterfront Property in Rye

Beaver Swamp Brook easily and profusely overflowed its banks the weekend of Oct. 28. The last house on Bradford Avenue was nearly cut off from Rye, as a new lake formed in several backyards in the vicinity.

Traffic Cop Added at School Drop-Off

The City of Rye will assign a police officer at the Apawamis Avenue/Milton Road intersection during school drop-off time to assist in pedestrian crossings and traffic direction. The assignment, which is on a trial basis for the rest of the school year, follows five months of talks between the City and the School District. During the trial period, both groups will continue their broader review of traffic safety issues around the schools.

The action was taken in response to community input about the increased population of the Middle and High Schools and the corresponding traffic increase at that location, said City Manager Paul Shew.

In 2002, the City and the School District shared the cost of a traffic study for the areas around each of the schools. Many of the recommendations have been implemented; renewed discussions will focus on updating the issues raised in the study. The Traffic and Transportation Committee will continue to aid in the review.

The City posts crossing guards at eight intersections and is currently recruiting to fill vacancies. If interested, contact the Rye Police Department at 967-1234 or visit the City website, www.rye.ny.gov.
