Thirty-Nine Steps, 39 Million That Is
Over 600 community members enthusiastically participated in America on the Move week at the Rye YMCA Sept. 23-30. Using pedometers distributed by the Rye Y, participants from Rye and other Sound Shore communities logged over 39 million steps — far exceeding the Y's goal of 1 million steps.

An important rite of passage for many Rye girls over the last 30 years has been the Rye School of Dance. The school, owned and operated by the Bratches family, has always offered a dynamic balance of hard work and serious choreography in a nurturing environment.

Don't Miss the Magic
The Rye Merchants Association is hosting its annual Mistletoe Magic Weekend Nov. 25 and 26. On Saturday night, downtown stores will be open until 10 p.m., offering candlelight shopping. Purchase Street will be closed to traffic and transformed into a carnival of fun on Sunday, with festive attractions and entertainment for all ages.

Children's Collective Hosts Coat Drive, Needs Angels
Twenty adult volunteers and 12 Resurrection CCD students helped sort and box donations at the 16th annual Children's Collective Coat Drive last month in the Resurrection Church basement. The Collective received a record 2,000 gently used coats which they delivered to homeless shelters and transitional housing in Westchester, the Bronx, Harlem, Bridgeport and Head Start.

This year the group also sent 50 boxes of clothing to a soldier in Afghanistan who distributes clothing to children there. Louise Sullivan, co-founder of the Collective, said Larry Levin of the UPS Store on Purchase Street provided invaluable help with the shipping.

The Children's Collective is looking for Christmas Angels to donate and sort presents for 1,000 children, ages infant to 17, this holiday season. E-mail the collective@aol.com.
