The following summarizes reports filed at Rye Police headquarters from 9/2 to 9/17. The information does not include final court or other actions.
9/2: Five New Jersey boaters were rescued from channel one mile south of Playland. NYPD Air 1 led search but had to abandon to refuel. With engine and cell phone dead, fishermen contacted Rye officers via handheld radio, but reception poor. To locate them, Rye PO advised them to set off flare, which they did. Five parties brought ashore in good health.
9/2: Dump truck observed traveling south on Stuyvesant Avenue with expired registration sticker. Driver unlicensed. Neither driver nor owner of truck could provide paperwork. Summonses all around, dump truck impounded.
9/2: Purchase Street resident reported that sometime in January 2006, a person known to her stole her personal information and used it to open an account with Capital One. Investigation opened.
9/2: Apawamis Club reported larceny: bolt cutters had broken hasp of storage container on tennis court parking area, where construction equipment is stored. Nothing confirmed stolen.
9/2: White Cadillac Escalade seen making illegal left onto northbound Boston Post Road from 1-95 North exit ramp. Driver’s Connecticut license suspended. Cited for improper turn, unlicensed operation. Escalade towed.
9/2: Horton Street resident stated she received bill for medical services from Kentucky hospital. She neither received services nor was she in Kentucky. Believes someone may be using old, lost Florida license. Completed sworn statement.
9/3: Peck Avenue woman reported that a neighbor is watching her with binoculars and is making her uncomfortable. Sworn statement to be completed.
9/3: At 1:30 a.m. on 9/1, complainant stated her young son heard a cabinet fall loudly in their home. Opening door he found a man, six feet tall with a large build, wearing a ski mask, gloves and boots inside apartment. Son pretended to be asleep, and then fell asleep. At 4 a.m. son woke up and told aunt, who was babysitting, of intruder. Mother returned home at 9:30, believed nothing was missing. On 9/2, she discovered three gold necklaces missing, as well as set of keys from her vehicle’s ashtray. Owner completed deposition.
9/3: Forest Avenue-area resident reported theft of $200 from kitchen counter, $800 from envelope in kitchen drawer, Nikon camera and her husband’s wedding band. Statement taken.
9/3: Brevoort Lane man reported theft of ladies’ Trek bicycle from outdoor storage shed. Deposition taken.
9/4: Westchester County line-painting truck reported striking a vehicle parked in front of Midland School. Damage report completed.
9/4: Woman reported latest of several incidents with ex-boyfriend. Requested police assistance.
9/5: At 2:21 a.m. security camera picked up truck knocking down street lamp in rear parking area of Midland Avenue credit union. Statement taken.
9/5: Rye Road complainant reported finding a crowbar on her front porch. Statement, and crowbar, taken.
9/5: Homeowner reported unknown party had entered her detached garage by side door. Nothing taken. Resident said she had never been able to open side door before.
9/5: Van Wagenen Avenue homeowners called police to civil dispute over boundary with Coveleigh Club. Stated Club workers had removed a fence near stonewall on right side of property, removing shrubs and measuring disputed property. City of Rye building inspector called to scene will clarify situation.
9/5: Driver of vehicle with California plates failed to signal left turn at Highland Avenue and Club Road. Registration on rear plate read: “3/07”. Driver produced valid license but expired insurance card. Summonsed, vehicle impounded.
9/5: Maple Avenue homeowner reported damaged glass front door, evidence of attempted burglary. Evidence found and placed in locker #6.
9/5: Orchard Lane homeowner reported that, at 8:44 p.m., he observed a white male, approximately 5’ 11”, athletic build, wearing a green shirt and shorts, with brown, short cropped hair and mesh water shoes run down his stairs and out front door. Second floor disturbed but nothing missing. Area canvassed by Rye/Port Chester/Harrison/County units, including K-9 and air support. Negative results.
9/5: During above search, undercover Harrison officers requested assistance with driver of white Honda Accord, a white male already in handcuffs on Rye Beach Avenue with two driver’s side flat tires when Rye officer arrived. When handcuffs were removed, driver said, “I had a lot to drink and I’m ******* lost.” He added, “I don’t know where the **** I am,” swaying from side to side. When asked for ID, he said, “I don’t know where it is. I just have money.”
During sobriety test he continued to sway and stagger with both arms up in the air. Alco sensor gave positive results. Based on observation and training, officer placed driver under arrest for DUI. During Miranda warnings, driver responded, “I have ****** rights and you don’t.” Refused chemical tests for urine and breath saying,” I ain’t doin’ anything.” Driver’s girlfriend stated that when he drinks heavily he becomes “a drunk tuff guy.”
9/5: During same city-wide mobilization after burglary report, County helicopter operator reported male on motorcycle driving erratically on Hornidge Road, Mamaroneck. Rider, with scar on right cheek, stopped on Boston Post Road in Rye. Produced NYS driver’s license and ID card, “Police Foundation of New Rochelle”. Stated, “I am just driving around cause I saw the helicopters.” Biker carrying chrome .38 pistol in right pants pocket and .22 in a holster on right hip. Placed under arrest and charged with violating gun permit. Held until 9 a.m. for arraignment.
9/6: Wallet of Seattle man found by Rye resident near T.D.’s Smoke Shop, turned in to police. Owner notified.
9/6: Club Road man reported finding bicycle by side of his house. Evidence taken to Police HQ.
9/7: Maple Avenue resident reported youths in street screaming profanities. Neighbor interviewed, counterclaimed reporting person harasses her children. Resident replied that neighbor’s kids and friends antagonize him and call him names. Complainants separated.
9/8: In second instance of extra bicycles in 48 hours, Anchor Drive woman reported finding 10-speed bike in her driveway. Taken to HQ and tagged.
9/8: Rye resident complained she is tired of her 22-year-old son’s lifestyle and wants him out of the house. Stated he has no job and only comes by to eat and shower before leaving again. Stepfather stated son has been known to break into residence if he does not have key. Officers informed young man of parents’ decision: he is not welcome on the property “until he has his life in order.” Agreed to vacate. Extra patrol card filed.
9/8: Another wallet found and turned in. Norwalk man reunited with property.
9/8: Peck Avenue family received suspicious package addressed to daughter. Determined to have been sent accidentally by family member.
9/8: Desk clerk at Marriott Courtyard reported verbal dispute between cab driver and passenger over taxi fare. Cab driver said he had driven to Manhattan and back with female passenger who refused to pay. Wished to press charges for theft of service. Passenger, standing in lobby and obviously intoxicated, “made numerous statements to police as to why she would not pay for the cab, most of which were unintelligible.” Passenger’s neighbor showed up, paid fare requested by driver.
9/9: A suspicious green minivan parked on Magnolia Place attempted to pull away onto Forest Avenue when police arrived. Driver produced Guatemalan passport, but revoked driver’s license. Had child’s bicycle in back. Placed under arrest for revoked license. Hispanic man walked up during vehicle inventory, producing Washington State license. Detained pending investigation. Then a grey Jeep Cherokee passed location several times. Two male Hispanics in Jeep detained. Driver “live-scanned”, vehicle impounded, bicycle placed in Youth Detective’s office.
9/11: On routine patrol at Barlow Lane and Anchor Drive, NYSPIN check of parked vehicle showed hit for Outstanding Warrant of Deportation. Worker on nearby construction site taken into custody when identity confirmed. Transported to Westchester County Jail.
9/11: Complainant stated that, over a “parking condition,” her neighbor has made threats to burn her house down. Complainant does not want to pursue police involvement at this time.
9/11: Hook Road homeowner returned home to find closed bathroom door. Went upstairs to change. Came down and found bathroom door wide open and red or maroon older model SUV speeding away. Nothing taken.
9/13: Woman and disabled husband argued over whether their young son should accompany man to work. He rolled over her foot with his wheelchair. Wife called police. Child okay. Domestic dispute report filed.
9/13: Brevoort Lane homeowner reported someone had cut construction tarp and taken items from son’s bedroom, family room and basement tool room. Statement taken from resident and contractor.
9/13: Complainant states unknown person placed “Please Do Not Park Here” sign on her car which she claims was legally parked on Central Avenue. Wishes to document incident.
9/13: Greenhaven homeowner reported finding brick, which may have been used in prior burglary at his residence. No prior burglary at his residence reported. Brick placed in evidence locker #5.
9/13: Called to same home of domestic disputants as 10 hours earlier. Wife wanted police to document verbal abuse. Said she had moved husband’s shotgun during his hospital stay.
9/14: Unregistered 8-foot inflatable boarded. Fisherman in possession of three short Porgies. Two summonses issued.
9/15: Criminal mischief reported at Christ’s Church: playhouse in playground area damaged. Deposition filed.
9/16: Complainant reported her ex-husband stole her laptop computer and returned it later, having obtained files and information that were password-protected. Completed owner’s deposition.
9/16: Park Lane resident reported identity theft. Account with AT&T Mobility opened in Wyoming under his name. Sworn statement taken.
9/16: One of double disputants from three days earlier reported theft of two New York license plates from his bedroom desk, along with his daily pain medications. Deposition taken.
9/16: Six minutes later, the other disputant stated a male called and repeated her name several times before hanging up. Said she felt scared.
9/17: Foreman of Purchase Street construction crew advised he was violating noise ordinance by working with power equipment before 8 a.m. Foreman agreed to desist, though by now it was after 8 a.m.
