The Friends of Rye Nature Center is holding a fundraiser for a new Nature Playground October 4, 5 to 7:30 p.m. at a private home. The theme is "Where the Wild Things Are". The Friends of Rye Nature Center believes that by allowing children to touch and be touched by nature, they will be encouraged to further explore, interact with and protect the natural world around them. For more information, please call the Nature Center at 967-5150.
The Rye Nature Center will hold How to See, a digital photo workshop on how to conceptualize nature photography, October 4, 9 am to noon. Part 1 will explore concepts including the "rule of thirds", using natural elements to frame the subject. In part 2, participants will take photos on the Rye Nature Center grounds. Part 3 is back in the classroom, looking with a critical eye at photos from the field. Participants will take home at least one 8.5x11 print from the session. The workshop is open to those 16 and over. Bring a digital camera. There is a $10 fee. Call 967-5150 to reserve a spot.
The cool winds are coming and so is the birds' need for a little extra fuel to keep warm. Why not help them by supplying a winter food source. The Friends of Rye Nature Center are pleased to announce the annual Fall Birdseed Sale. Orders must be received by Friday, October 17. Seeds must be picked up Saturday, October 25, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Call Jim Kuster at 925-2312 with questions.
Spend the afternoon examining the details of the Wildflowers of the Marshlands, Sunday, September 28, 2 p.m. Learn the characteristics that make identifying them a joy and a puzzle, under the guidance of Megan Aitchison.
If you've ever taken a great photo at the Marshlands Conservancy, have it framed and wired by Sunday, October 5, to submit for the Annual Marshlands Photography Exhibit. The exhibit opens Sunday, October 12. Call 813-7010 for more information.
Rye Town Park and the Friends of Rye Town Park will present Tree Care, From Roots to Canopy—A Guide for Homeowners, Saturday, October 4. Meet at the flagpole and sundial gardens at 10 a.m. for light refreshments. Licensed arborist Frazer Pehmoeller of the Bartlett Tree Experts Company will lead the program. He will walk participants through the park while covering topics like how to tell if a tree is healthy, how to prepare trees for draughts and storms, and protecting trees from construction. He will also answer any questions. Members of the Friends of Rye Town Park will discuss their goal of planting more trees in the park and ways people can help. RSVP to Rye Town Park at 967-0965.
