Aspiring apple experts ages 7-11 will find out why New York City is called the "Big Apple", who Johnny Appleseed really was, and other fruity facts during Big Apple Bonanza: Facts, Folklore & Food, Saturday September 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Square House. The tasty afternoon will include making applesauce and caramel apples, as well as apple-themed crafts. Space is limited, so call The Square House at 967-7588 to reserve a space.
Soundview Sports will host an open house at Manhattanville College, Sunday, September 28, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Now entering its 14th year, the Soundview Sports program is designed to teach sportsmanship and skills to boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 14. Students choose four sports to play during the camp, which runs June 29-August 14, 2009. Sign up by October 10 for a discounted camp fee. Call 323-5400 for more information.
All Kindergarten and first graders are invited to take part in six weeks of sports games at Double Play Sports starting September 29 at the Midland gym. A T-shirt and trophy will be presented to each participant. The cost is $160 for residents, $185 non-residents. Call Rye Recreation at 967-2535.
Calling all writers! If you are in grades 6-12, this is your chance to create a mysterious tale, meet world-famous masters of mystery and win prizes for your work. Just sign up for the Edgar Allan Poe Mystery Writing Enrichment Program. All you have to do is write a short story in the spirit of Poe, in 2,000 words or less. Submit your story by October 1. Bring your little one to the library to read a good book and support a great cause, Thursday, October 2, 10 a.m. The Rye Free Reading Room is partnering with Jumpstart to support its Read for the Record campaign, dedicated to building awareness for reading and early childhood education, and to providing books for children in low-income communities. “Corduroy” is this year's book. Jumpstart's corporate sponsors will donate money for each child who participates.
Good manners never go out of style. Please and Thank You 101, a four-week class on basic manners for grades K-2 starts Tuesday, October 7, 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. at the Damiano Recreation Center. The course covers polite conversation, dining and table manners and note writing, along with sportsmanship and respect for others. There is a $75 fee. Call 967-2535.
Let's Get Cookin', a program for tiny chefs, starts Tuesday, October 7, and runs through December 9 for ages 3-5; it runs Thursday, October 16, through November 20 for children age 5 or in Kindergarten. Held at the Damiano Recreation Center, classes will combine cooking and eating yummy concoctions with an introduction to measuring and recipes. Call 967-2535.
Help your child find a voice at Speak Up, a four-week course for kids ages 3-5. Designed to enhance speaking and communication skills, classes will help participants speak confidently to anyone, anywhere, any time.
Exercises like role-playing, reading out loud and telling stories are fun and effective. The first session begins Tuesday, October 7, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the Damiano Recreation Center. The course runs through October 28. There is a $100 fee. Call 967-2535
