Council Approves September 11
Memorial Site
At a special meeting June 1, the City Council decided on the location of the September 11th Memorial. After hearing comments from the project architect, representatives of the Landmarks Advisory Committee, the Board of Architectural Review, the Rye Historical Society, the September 11th Committee and the Rye Garden Club, and residents, they voted unanimously in favor of a memorial between Haviland Lane and Blind Brook.

Access to the cultural and academic resources of Purchase College may soon become even more convenient for some area residents.

Take Steps to Make Rye More Walkable
The City’s Traffic and Trails Committee is working on two projects to improve pedestrian safety. In a report presented to the City Council by Councilman Mack Cunningham May 27, plans were outlined to connect the Playland Parkway footpath to Theodore Fremd Avenue, so that people can walk to Playland from the Harrison and Rye train stations. This will require cooperation between the City and Westchester County, which owns Playland Parkway.
Rye’s Board of Assessment Review to Hear Public on Annual Grievance Day
On the third Tuesday in June, five Rye citizens from different walks of life will shoulder their annual responsibilities and gather at City Hall. For several hours during this single day, Board of Assessment Review Chairman Mark Gardner and fellow members Bob Byrne, Ed Collins, Debbie Davis-Gaillard, and Paul Denton will hear from City Assessor Noreen Whitty, as well as various members of the public protesting their tax bills.
City Reports 2008 Operating Deficit
The just-released City of Rye Comprehensive Annual Financial Report showed some negative turns in 2008, an outcome that was in line with expectations when the City Council approved the 2008 city budget.
Keith, Jovanovich to Run On Slate with French

This week, Suzanna Keith and Peter Jovanovich announced their candidacies for City Council. Both are longtime volunteers in the community. Keith is a founding member of the Environmental Advocacy Group of Rye (EAGR) and was a past chair of Twig, Inc. Jovanovich is a member of the Board of Architectural Review and treasurer of the Friends of Rye Nature Center.

Judge’s Ruling on Harrison’s Project Home Run Gives Rye the Next At-Bat
Administrative Law Judge Daniel O’Connell ruled May 29 that Harrison may not proceed with its plan to fill in ball fields next to Beaver Swamp Brook. He stated: “I have determined there is a substantive and significant issue about whether Project Home Run would be compatible with the public health and welfare weighing standard.”
Taxi Vouchers for Seniors
The Rye Interfaith Housing Corp. (RIHC) reminds senior citizens of the taxi voucher program available to them. Any Rye senior who is a resident of Rye Manor or participates in the Enhanced STAR or 467 property tax relief programs, is eligible to receive taxi vouchers. In addition, seniors 60 or over who are experiencing temporary financial or mobility hardship may be eligible for limited periods.
