The following summarizes reports filed at Rye Police headquarters from 5/13 to 6/2. The information does not include final court or other actions.
5/13: Central Avenue resident returned from work to find compost pile strewn all over lawn. Despite undoubted benefit to grass from organic material, homeowner filed civilian complaint.
5/13: Livery driver requested assistance with a brother and sister from Chicago who were fighting in his van. Car 14 dispatched.
5/14: Senior resident reported receiving local phone call at 2:13 a.m. with only static on line. Complainant alleged this was the second such occurrence. Sworn statement taken.
5/15: Officer observed vehicle with defective brake light on Playland Access Drive. Driver could not produce license; handed over Mexican ID instead. Spanish-speaking officer determined woman’s license suspended in New York. Driver arrested, vehicle towed.
5/15: Lake Carmel woman’s truck damaged in Rye Manor parking lot while at work. Witnesses claimed to have seen tan Toyota Camry strike vehicle and drive off. Plate number came back to Theall Road resident who claimed she was not involved in any accident. Officer dispatched.
5/15: Gramercy Avenue homeowner stated moving van damaged tree in rear of property bordering Davis Avenue. Tree observed hanging dangerously low over street. Neighbor provided name and phone number of moving company he had used.
5/15: Rye resident called to report spouse was breaking property after argument. Parties had calmed down by the time police arrived.
5/15: First in series of bike thefts in city. Horton Street man reported silver/black and green 21-speed Columbia bike stolen from train station rack while at work. Deposition completed.
5/16: Commuter reported his front license plate stolen from train station. Statement taken.
5/16: RR station saga continues: bicycle found in station plaza.
5/17: Boston Post Road service station attendant called via cell phone to say three males purchased gas and then wouldn’t pay. Victim stated he attempted to lock self inside station, but two of the perps broke the window and door glass and forced their way in, injuring him and stealing approximately $1,500 in cash before fleeing northbound in gold Nissan.
Detectives and Westchester police sent to scene. Bronx man, 17, arrested; search continued for accomplices.
5/18: Ridgeland Manor resident reported graffiti in pastel-colored chalk on father’s fence. Similar markings discovered on house next door where tenants with children live. Complainant will discuss unacceptability of Expressionist artwork on fence with owner of neighboring house.
5/18: Phone and wallet stolen from cubby at front desk area of YMCA during workout. Statement taken.
5/19: Forest Avenue resident reported theft over weekend of three bicycles from driveway. Sworn statement completed.
5/19: Martin Road resident reported neighbor’s dog had bitten son on wrist. Animal Bite Report completed.
5/20: Manursing Avenue resident reported possibly rabid skunk lying in grass at south end of driveway, blocking access to motor vehicle. Officer fired one round to put down animal; searched in bushes for shell casing with negative results.
5/22: Two-wheel crime wave continues: Milton Road resident reported bicycle stolen from front porch. Sworn statement taken.
5/22: Burglary alarm sent from Perfection Detection concerning Forest Avenue property. Exterior screen found damaged and window open. No intruder or disturbance noted. Backup officers and Marine unit checked vicinity with negative results.
5/24: Paintballs shot at Boston Post Road apartment building in middle of night, damaging one resident’s screen and setting off another’s burglar alarm. Sworn statements taken.
5/24: White Plains man reported purchasing salad and muffin from Purchase Street establishment. Back home, he discovered “hard, crunchy” object in salad to be glass shard. Notified shop owner about incident.
5/26: Central Avenue resident reported noticing iPhone had fallen to floor of Yellow Cab as he was exiting vehicle. Unsuccessfully tapped on window to get attention of driver, who drove off. Resident subsequently called iPhone, hoping driver would hear ringing. Phone was then turned off by unknown party. Yellow Cab company contacted with negative results.
5/27: Complainant stated person(s) unknown used duplicate Visa debit card to withdraw $42 from credit union account on Staten Island. Deposition completed.
5/28: Wild bike theft spree goes on: gray “Bulls” mountain bike reported stolen from rack at train station. Broken chain and lock found nearby. Vehicle is a German brand, uncommon in U.S., with small hole in seat. Owner’s deposition completed.
5/30: Beck Avenue driver stopped on Midland Avenue for using cell phone while driving. License had been revoked in New York State. Charged with “Aggravated Unlicensed Operation—Alcohol Related”. Hmmm.
5/31: Medical kit with Epi pen, inhaler and other supplies found at Rye Rec. Placed in locker E.
5/31: Swimmer at Oakland Beach reported theft of his gym bag when he returned from water. Bag contained cash, keys, and other valuables. Owner’s deposition taken.
5/31: Rye Police called to town dock to discover 34-foot boat with propeller stuck in mooring. Officers cut vessel free.
6/1: Complainant stated she was being followed around town by party known to her. Civilian statement taken; car 10 assigned.
6/1: Will it never end? Midland Avenue resident reported her son’s bike stolen from Rye Middle School. Owner’s deposition taken.
6/2: Double theft at YMCA: resident reported his car keys stolen from gym bag during workout. Went out to parking lot to discover thief had used keys to enter car and steal wallet. Could have stolen entire car. Statements filled out.
