Raising a Racquet for Squash

Squash fans and players, from tiny tots to top-ranked pros, gathered at the newly renovated squash facility at Apawamis Club May 23 for a fun-filled celebration of World Squash Day 2009. Children took part in clinics, while players young and old competed in the Battle of the Border. The South (New York), captained by Peter Briggs, racquet sports director at Apawamis, and Natalie Grainger, world’s No. 2, prevailed over the North (Connecticut).

In addition to Grainger, Jonathan Power, formerly No. 1 in the world, and John White, top ten in the world and director of squash at Franklin and Marshall College, also joined the action, while squash pros from area clubs exhibited their skills on the club's two new doubles courts. Hydrive kept players hydrated and Ralph’s Wines & Spirits provided a wine tasting at the end of the day. Everyone sported a “Squash 2016” T-shirt, which was the “entry fee”.

All proceeds went directly to supporting the Squash 2016 Olympic Bid. There is passionate support worldwide for including the sport in the 2016 Olympic Games. For more information, visit www.squash2016.info/.
