Garnets Ousted in First Round of Sectionals
Rye’s baseball season came to a disappointing end on the road at Beacon May 30, as the 11th-seeded Garnets fell to the No. 6 Blue Demons 12-9 in the first round of the Class A Section playoffs. Four errors put RHS (10-10-1) in an early hole, and their four-run rally in the 7th inning was not enough to overcome those miscues.
“Different game, same story for us,” said head coach Mike Bruno. “We didn’t make plays and went down seven runs. We came back as we always do, but it was not enough to win. All the credit goes to Beacon – they were the best team we have seen all year, and they hit the ball and made those mistakes hurt.”
Unfortunately for Rye, they were missing one of their key players in Matt O’Neill, who had suffered a concussion in a collision with Will Ramsey in a game the week before. The playoff contest was not without its highlights though, as seniors Ramsey and Topher Triano each homered for RHS.
The Garnets will look entirely different in the 2010 season, with 12 seniors set to graduate later this month.
