Leadership Opportunities Await Jefferson Scholar

Lauren Groetch was named one of 34 Jefferson Scholars, and will enter the University of Virginia in August. The School of the Holy Child senior was chosen out of 971 nominees from across the globe. The scholarship covers full tuition and university-related expenses, as well as leadership training and foreign travel and study. Lauren was chosen based on the exceptional potential she has demonstrated in the areas of leadership, scholarship and citizenship.

Chow Wins One More Science Award Before Graduating

Melanie Chow was one of 20 students to win the first-place U.S. Army Award in Medicine and Health at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair May 19, in Albuquerque. More than 1,500 students from around the world competed at the Intel Fair, the world's largest and most prestigious pre-college science fair. The Rye High School senior's award included $3,000 in savings bonds.

RHS Makes Newsweek Top 100, For Second Year

Rye High School came in at No. 84 in a Newsweek magazine ranking of the top U.S. public schools, featured in the May 28 issue. Twelve hundred public schools were ranked according to a ratio devised by Newsweek's Jay Matthews: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2006 divided by the number of graduating seniors.

Rye High's rating dropped from a high of No. 42 in 2006, but was way above 2005, when the school was ranked No. 703.

Student Recognized for Service

Caroline Segal has been awarded the Margaret Manley Community Service Scholarship by the Junior League of Westchester on the Sound, in recognition of her exemplary community service. Caroline, a senior at Rye Country Day School, has performed hundreds of hours of service and was honored for her work on behalf of the community, especially for women and children.

History Head Chosen for Symposium on Property Rights

Richard Strean, head of the History Department at Rye Country Day School, is one of 45 high school and college teachers from across the country invited to participate in a colloquium called "Understanding Liberty and Choice: Property Rights and Incentives," which will take place in September in Louisville, Ky. The three-day program will look at rules and incentives affecting property rights in the contemporary U.S. and Russia. Dr. Strean hopes to bring ideas from the conference to his Comparative Government and Economics classes.
