RHS Lion's Club Athletes of the Month
Ono and Miller Earn Honors For March and April
Rye High School seniors Shotaro Ono and Carly Miller have been tabbed as respective winners of the Lion's Club Athlete of the Month for March and April.
Ono, a Japanese student who plans on attending Tokyo University, was a force on the Varsity Swim Team for the Garnets. A teammember since eighth grade, Ono was named All League from 2004-2007 and All Section 2005-2007 and competed in the New York State Championships in 2006 and 2007.
“I am really privileged to receive the award,” said Ono. “As a Japanese student it is a great experience. I didn't expect it at all.”
Ono, who began learning English in 2001, is currently preparing for the Tokyo University entrance exam, held in February of 2008. After college, he plans on returning to the United States for graduate school.
In addition to excellence in athletics and academics, Ono has played saxophone on the Rye High School Band for the past three years.
Miller recently wrapped up her Varsity career at RHS by leading the Garnets' lacrosse team to the Sectional Finals. Although they were unsuccessful, falling to Nanuet 13-12 in double overtime, Miller leaves behind a legacy at Rye.
She will be heading off to Villanova in the fall, where she plans on studying education while playing on the school's Varsity lacrosse team. The Wildcats are getting a special player in Miller, one with a laundry list of accolades earned in her time as a Garnet. Miller was a member of Rye's Varsity lacrosse team all four years, serving as co-captain the last two. She was named All League and All Section from 2005-2007, First Team County Selection in 2005 and 2006 (the award has not been given out yet for 2007) and took the Garnets to the State Semifinals in 2005 and 2006.
Miller was also a force on the Varsity basketball team for her four years at Rye. In 2004 she was part of a team that made the State Semifinals, and in 2007 as a co-captain she was honored with All League and All Section awards.
Off the court, Miller has been an Honor Roll student since 2003 and has made an impact helping others with her spare time. She has participated in the Afghanistan Aid Club, Habitat for Humanity, Ward Summer Institute, Community Service Policy Committee and assisted in teaching at Soundview Sports.
