Painting the Pond
From her Kirby Lane studio, artist Ellen Liman has painted the Mill Pond for over twenty years. On Saturday, May 17, the first exhibit of over 30 of her oil and mixed media paintings of the pond opens at The Knapp House Galleries, with a cocktail reception from 5 to 8 p.m.
What’s most special about the Mill Pond for a landscape painter, says Liman, is the light. “It changes beautifully and dramatically with the time of day.” She also delights in the views of the Sound, Manursing, and beyond.
Of her rich landscapes, ART NEWS noted, “Liman’s work honors nature in a most sophisticated manner — it escapes being decorative because of her confident brush strokes and careful composition. The strong connection between artist and subject matter manifests itself in the vibrancy of her scenes.”
An artist her whole life, Liman studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Art Students’ League, Columbia University and the National Academy of Design. She is a member of the Westchester Arts Council. Her work is in many private and corporate collections.
Liman’s exhibited paintings will be for sale, with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to the Rye Historical Society. To view Liman’s work, visit ellenliman.com.
The Knapp House Galleries, located at 265 Rye Beach Avenue at Milton Road, is open Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Painting the Rye Mill Pond” runs through September.
