Kids’ Corner

The library offers a program honoring local heroes. Children are invited to Read with a Hero, Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m.
This year, officers from the Rye City Police Department will be on-hand to read stories, talk about bravery and courage, and demonstrate their lifesaving equipment and techniques.
Children will make their own bookmarks, receive a copy of Judy Barrett’s classic, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”, and enjoy a tasty treat.
Teens can catch a great movie after school at the library.
“Stardust” (PG) will be shown Wednesday, May 14, 4 p.m. Based on Neil Gaiman’s novel, the story is set in a countryside town bordering on an enchanted land, where a young man makes a promise to his beloved that he’ll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm.

Join the fun at The Rye United Methodist Nursery School’s annual Children’s Carnival May 17, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. Children will enjoy pony rides, a giant slide, a jumping castle, a silent auction, food, crafts and prizes. For more information, call 921-1939.
Fourth graders, get ready for Fourth Grade Ice Cream and Game Night Friday, May 9, 7 to 8:45 p.m. at Rye Recreation. Enjoy Bingo, win prizes and have your favorite flavor. Pre-registration is required, maximum 100 children. The cost is $10 per person. For more information, call 967-2535.
Enrollment is now open for the Rye Nature Center’s Summer Ecology Camp. The camp offers flexible and diverse programs for children of all ages starting as young as 3 1/2. The camp is open to both members and non-members. Programs run in weekly sessions from June 30 through August 18.  Campers can choose to participate in one or all seven weeks.
Nancy Carlson, naturalist and educator, runs the Ecology Camp. The program is designed to offer children of all ages outdoor experiences focused on activities that combine healthy play with a fun approach to education about nature and the surrounding environment.
Children will learn about fish, bugs, and reptiles, and how these animals survive in the wild. They’ll also explore the center’s 47 acres of woods through hiking, games, stories and adventures. The weekly themes include On The Water, Strive to Survive, Digging Deep, Hangin With Herps, Talk to the Animals, Have to Have a Habitat, and Hunters and the Hunted.

Get ready to ride ‘em high at Playland Opening Day Saturday, May 10, at noon. All rides will be open. The opening day parade, with its strolling entertainers, is a must. Admission to the park is free.
