Arts for All

A reception for artist Connie Freid will be held at the Rye Free Reading Room Saturday, May 17, at 1 p.m. An exhibit of her new mixed media works, “Inspirations”, will be on display at the library from May 13 through June 27.
The exhibit features pieces that pay homage to those who have inspired the artist, ranging from family members to famous artists. In addition, the show will include work from the “Sounds of Silence” series. These paintings portray people as they confront barriers and transcend stereotypes. The award-winning Westchester Choral Society will present an all-Brahms concert  Sunday, May 18, at 3 p.m. at Rye Presbyterian Church. The program, which will be conducted by WCS Music Director Frank Nemhauser, will include the Liebeslieder Waltzes, Four Songs for Women's Chorus, and Deutsche Volkslieder.  David Baranowski, a resident of Larchmont, will be the accompanist.
Asked about his inspiration for the May 18 concert, Nemhauser said, "Brahms is one of my favorite composers.  I wanted to share another side of Brahms — the non-Requiem side.  The Four Songs (op. 17) gives us a chance to feature the women of the choir. The Liebeslieder Waltzes are a great example of salon music at its best.  Springtime and Brahms, a perfect match."
Tickets are $25, $10 for students with ID. A "meet the artists" reception will follow the concert. For further information about upcoming WCS events, visit www.westchesterchoralsociety.org.
Lorie Gurian is the featured artist at the Rye Nature Center this month. Her watercolor and oil paintings are on display through the end of May. The exhibit, “Au Naturel,” is open to the public weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The focus of her paintings is nature, whether close-ups of vines, flowers or animals or panoramic landscapes inspired by local and European scenes she loves.
