Garnets Drop a Pair of Games to Section Powers

Heading into May 1’s game against 9-3 Sleepy Hollow at home, the Garnets were rested, relaxed, and ready to build upon their 6-0 record. Unfortunately, Rye fell behind early and eventually lost 3-2 to the Horsemen.
“We knew we were going to be challenged,” said senior captain Amanda Buckley. “It was such a good game and everyone kept up such a high energy level and played so well. It's a shame that they came out on top, but sometimes that's just the way it goes."
Sleepy Hollow put the Garnets in a 3-0 hole heading into the bottom of the sixth, but sophomore Karly Fitzgerald cranked a two-run homer to bring Rye within one run. It was not enough however, as the Horsemen were able to hold on and shut the door on any potential Garnets comeback.
Rye head coach Alex Tejera was thrilled with the way his team played, despite the loss. “They did everything right, including making some amazing plays in the field,” he said.
The Garnets dropped to 6-2 Friday, May 2, in a lopsided 15-2 loss at Pelham. “I don’t think anyone expected Pelham to hit he ball the way they did,” said Buckley. “And it was the first time we were unable to keep up with a team, so that kind of hurt. We have another chance to play them, and next time we will be much more prepared and ready.”
Rye plays three games post press time, and then heads to Eastchester Monday, May 12. The Sectionals begin later this month.
