Garnets Have Lost Some Close Ones

Considering the 15-14 loss to Scarsdale May 3, at home, was the Garnets’ fourth one-goal loss in their last eight games, the team’s 3-7-2 record is a bit deceiving. In all, Rye has only been outscored 150-140 this season, and has posted a respectable 3-4-2 record in league play.
The regular season winds down this week after three post press time contests. Rye will have a chance in their final three games to pay back a pair of those teams that defeated them by one goal. First, Rye hosts Mamaroneck Saturday, May 10, at 5 p.m. The Garnets lost to the Tigers 14-13 April 15, on the road. Pearl River visits Nugent Stadium May 12, followed by another bout with Nanuet May 14, in the regular season finale. The Golden Knights are the defending Section champs and currently are undefeated in league play. They defeated the Garnets 15-14 April 22, in a rematch of last year’s Section Title game, in which Rye fell in a double overtime heartbreaker.
With a roster full of scorers like Liz Chabot (27 points), Katie Murtagh (25 points), Erica DiNardo (22 points), Molly O’Brien (23 points), Emma Tucci (19 points) and Torie Stearns (11 points), the Garnets could be a team that sneaks up on opponents come the Sectionals. If they are to succeed however, they must learn to win the close ones as the regular season comes to a close.
