In Loss, Garnets Prove They Can Play With Elite

In a game featuring a pair of teams that had won a combined 19 of their previous 20 games, the cold and blustery elements proved to be a factor in Pelham’s 5-3 win against the Garnets, May 2, in Rye.
Garnets’ pitcher Kevin Kennedy was constantly blowing on his pitching hand to maintain the feeling in his fingers. Nevertheless, the senior captain got out of the first inning having given up only one run. Rye’s offense responded in the bottom of the inning by posting three runs, with Kennedy helping his own cause with a two-run single, and then junior Brogan Matthews batting the pitcher in.
Pelham was able to fight back in the game, eventually taking a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth, where the Garnets threatened to surpass the Pelicans by loading the bases. But, the excellent inside pitching of Pelham’s Greg Bratone dashed any hopes of a Rye comeback.
Even though they lost and dropped to 9-3, head coach Mike Bruno considered it a moral victory of sorts, because it showed that his team could contend with a team of Pelham’s caliber. Senior second baseman Remy Totten said the team felt really good about the way they played and how close they came to beating 12-1 Pelham. He added that the conditions made it really hard to throw, field, and run the bases.
The Garnets play three games post press time before hitting the road for a tournament at Pearl River High School Saturday, May 10.
