FLOOD FATIGUE: April 15 Storm Sends Another Wallop; City Seeks State and Federal Assistance
For two days, April 15 and 16, the second major flood in six weeks pounded Rye, impacting about 1,300 residents and dozens of businesses. An estimated 464 locations were without power on April 16, according to a report from the City Manager's office.

School Board Endorses 8.54% Budget Increase, 5.54% Tax Rate Increase
After months of deliberation, the Board of Education endorsed an 8.5% budget-to-budget increase and a 5.5% tax rate increase at its April 17 Board meeting. The Board voted 7-0 in favor, and it will be put to a public vote May 15. If approved by the community, the District’s 2007-08 fiscal year budget will be set at $64,949,000.

Three Now in School Board Race for Two Seats
Steve Feeney, former School Board president, submitted his petition by the April 25 deadline to run for School Board election. Kendall Egan, a former Milton PTO president, and current Board member Bob Zahm had previously announced their candidacies. The election is May 15.
BAR Gives Go-Ahead to 9/11 Memorial Design
At its April 23 meeting Rye's Board of Architectural Review approved the 2001 Memorial Bridge design, 3-1. Although the Landmarks Advisory Committee, by a vote of 6-1, recommended that the design be rejected, the BAR found the proposed plan “appropriate” for the Village Green.
The Landmarks Commission objected to the size and prominence of the outer pillars flanking the bridge, saying that they encroached on the landmarked Village Green.

LATEST SCHOOL BUDGET:
8.54% Spending Increase, 4.99% Tax Increase
At its Budget Hearing meeting May 1, the Rye City School Board decided to lower the proposed 2007-08 tax rate from 5.54% to 4.99% by using $195,000 in interest earned from the General Fund and $200,000 from its Tax Certiorari Balance. The Board did not, however, reduce the proposed 8.54% budget-to-budget spending increase.
