Helen Camps

Helen Place Camps, of Rye, passed away peacefully March 25. She was 80.

Mrs. Camps was born Jan. 11, 1927, in New York City. She grew up in Rye, graduating from Rye Country Day School. She worked as a fashion model for Hattie Carnegie before marrying Lowell Camps June 19, 1949. They were married for 58 years.

A true renaissance woman, Mrs. Camps was a club champion golfer and tennis player and as skilled at fishing as she was at creating oil paintings and crafts.

She made every day special and the lives of her family and countless friends a little more complete. Her selfless love and sense of family will be remembered by all who knew her.

She is survived by her loving husband, Lowell Camps; a daughter, Linda Louise Camps of Greenwich, and two sons, Jeffery Lowell Camps and his wife Judy of Larchmont, and Christopher Lowell Camps and his wife Loren of Katonah. Her grandchildren, Ashley, Jackson, Brooke and Hunter, who called her Nana, will always know they were the joy of her heart.

A service was held March 29 at Rye Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rye Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund in her memory.

Joshua Levine

Joshua Levine, of Rye, died April 6. He was 90.

Mr. Levine was born May 24, 1916, in New York City, to Jack and Lillian Levine. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, beginning as a private, and discharged as a captain. In the European Theater of Operations, he investigated claims against the U.S. by Europeans who suffered non-combat damage.

After graduating from City College of New York, Mr. Levine attended New York University School of Law, where he served as president of the student body Pre-Bar Association. He was formerly the managing partner of Davis and Gilbert, where he spent his entire legal career, starting as a law clerk in 1936. He represented many of the firm's leading clients, including Best Foods, Weight Watchers International and several major advertising agencies.

Mr. Levine was one of six founders of Beth Emeth Synagogue in Larchmont, served as president. He was active in and honored by the UJA.

An avid fisherman and raconteur, he was also a righteous man, always maintaining the highest morals.

A loving husband, father and Poppy, he touched all who knew him.

Mr. Levine is survived by his wife, Selene; three daughters, Judi Levine and her husband Bernie Bornstein, Beth Levine and her husband Henry Abarbanel, and Linda Spellman and her husband Eric; grandchildren Brett, Sara, Lindsey and Matthew and a brother, Harold.

A funeral service was held April 8 at Zion Memorial Chapel, followed by interment at Sharon Gardens Cemetery.

James Loveless

James D. Loveless, 76, of Morris, Conn., formerly of Rye, passed away April 7 at the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Conn.

He was born Sept. 29, 1930 to Lillian and Max Loveless in Bradford, Penn., where he grew up. He graduated from St. Lawrence University after serving in the Korean War.

He retired as a biologist at the Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research, where he worked for more than 30 years.

He was active and served on boards at Rye Presbyterian Church and Rye Nature Center. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed birding, fishing, hunting and gardening over the years. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing and, in his younger days, skiing.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jean; a son, Steven of Cos Cob; a daughter, Susan and son-in-law Mark Carriero and their two children Emily and Joey of Greenwich. Also surviving are his sister Eleanor and brother-in-law of Pleasantville, Pa.; three nieces and their families and two nephews of Asheville, N.C.

A memorial service will be held Friday, April 27, at 2 p.m. at Rye Presbyterian Church.
