Public Hearing on Parking Meters

The City Council is considering extending the hours of parking meter operation from 6 to 9 p.m. At the Council’s March 25 meeting, Councilwoman Catherine Parker noted that the meters have brought a sizable amount of money to the City and the Central Business District. “We have a lot of restaurants and a lot of people coming into Rye to dine.” While not a proponent of meters, Parker said she believes they are here to stay. “And there is free parking on Purchase Street.”

A public meeting on extending meter hours will be held at the next City Council meeting April 15. At the same meeting, a public hearing will also be held on amending local law to provide a new three-hour parking limit for Car Park #3, the small lot behind TD Bank. Councilwoman Parker said the lot is one of the least utilized and the change will benefit people coming downtown to have their hair done and will mean one less disruption in the work day of part-time employees of downtown businesses.
