APRIL 11
Amphibians Up Close

Put on your rubber boots and join the Westchester County Parks Department for a close-up look at our local frogs, toads and salamanders at 1 p.m. at the Trailside Nature Museum, Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Routes 35 and 121 South in Cross River. Learn about amphibian life cycles and adaptations and how to imitate their songs and calls, and then visit their homes with dip nets in hand.

Young visitors will enjoy seeing representatives of the amphibian population on temporary display before and after the program. The program is ideal for ages 5 and up. For more information, call 864-7322.

One Word ... Plastics

Join New York Times film critic Janet Maslin and author Mark Harris at a screening of "The Graduate" at 7:15 p.m. at the Jacob Burns Film Center. This breakthrough 1967 classic starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft will be shown as part of the Film Center's “Pictures at a Revolution Series”. A Q &A with Maslin and Harris will follow the film.

Meet Poet Mark Doty

In celebration of National Poetry Month, Mark Doty will read selections from “Fire to Fire”, at Manhattanville College, Reid Castle, at 7 p.m. The event is part of the college’s “Meet the Writers’ literary series. Doty’s “Fire to Fire”, his eighth collection, won the National Book Award for Poetry in 2008. He is the only American poet to have received the T.S. Eliot Prize in the U.K. His works of nonfiction prose include “Dog Years”, which was a New York Times bestseller in 2007.

Los Lobos

See three-time Grammy Award-winners Los Lobos at the Emelin Theatre at 8 p.m. For 35 years, this L.A. band has captivated audiences with their inspired blend of blues, rockabilly, jazz, and Latin music, and is known the world over.

Folk From Up North

Slavic Splendor

The Performing Arts Center at Purchase College presents the National Philharmonic of Russia at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall. Founded in 2003, artistic director and principal conductor Vladimir Spivakov builds upon the legacy of Russia’s great symphonic traditions, while also turning his attention to rarely-performed works and 20th-century pieces.

The program includes Prokofiev’s “Lieutenant Kije Suite” op. 60; Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, op. 35; Stravinsky’s Divertimento from “The Fairy’s Kiss”; and Tchaikovsky’s Suite from “The Sleeping Beauty” op. 66. Exhibit by Rye Artist

The Manhattanville College Department of Music will present “SHOWTUNE”, a delightful musical revue of the songs of composer/lyricist Jerry Herman, at 8 p.m. both nights. Jerry Herman is best known for the Broadway musicals “Mame”, “Hello Dolly!” and “La Cage Aux Folles”. A cast of eight talented students will perform Herman’s work under the direction of Artist-in-Residence Mark Cherry and Assistant Director Beverly Meyer.

The performances will take place in the new Creative Arts Center on the college’s campus. Admission is $10, $5 for students and seniors. Tickets available at the door.

APRIL 18
Theater for Kids

The Emelin Theater presents a Theatreworks USA production of "Junie B. Jones" at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. First grade can be kind of scary, but with the chance to make new friends and stage a half-time show for her kickball-playing classmates, it might not be so bad after all.

A Modern Spring

The Performing Arts Center, Purchase College presents the Westchester Philharmonic conducted by George Manahan, Music Director of the New York City Opera. Performances are at 8 p.m. on the 18th and at 3 p.m. on the 19th in the Concert Hall. The program includes Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin; Adams’ Shaker Loops; Barber’s Capricorn Concerto; and Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite.

Creepy Crawlers

The exciting New York Metro Reptile Expo will be at the Westchester County Center at 198 Central Avenue in White Plains from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pet reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates will be on display and for sale, as will books, supplies and cages.
