Eggers Named Lions Club Athlete of the Month
Rye High School senior Brendan Eggers, co-captain of the Garnets’ swim team, was selected as Lions Club Athlete for the month of March. Eggers won the 2008 Coaches Award and played an integral role on Rye’s 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. Both foursomes qualified for the State championships, where they finished 12th and 7th respectively.
“This award means a lot for me, especially since it’s my senior year and our team did amazingly at States,” said Eggers, who has been with the Garnets since eighth grade. “Carle Fierro has done a great job as head coach, and has been a major contributor to our success.” Eggers added, “It’s also an honor to earn the same award as my great friend and friendly rival Ryan Feeley. After all these years, there is finally something that makes us equal.”
It’s not uncommon for Eggers to share his good fortune with others. The altruistic senior has donated countless hours of his free time to a variety of causes. He was selected by his peers in IMPACT to be a leader of the organization, which coordinates community projects such as food and clothing drives, soup kitchen staffing, and the delivery of essentials to the homeless in nearby communities. Eggers is also a member of My Soldier.
In addition to his commitments to school clubs, Eggers has participated in – and raised money for – Swim Across America, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Make Cures Happen Swim”, Habitat For Humanity, and the Crop Hunger Walk. Eggers also volunteered with Rye Presbyterian Church to help clean up damage caused by the 2007 floods, and collected food and supply donations for rescue workers at Ground Zero in the wake of the September 11 attacks.
