Holy Child Educators Give Advice On Daughters Leaving For College

Ann Sullivan, Head of School at School of the Holy Child, and Amber Vitti Hill, Director of College Counseling and Guidance, have collaborated on an article for the Parents League of New York entitled, "When Our Daughters Leave for College". The article is a part of the College Bound section of the Parents League Review.

Sullivan and Hill’s article states, “When daughters leave home to attend college, there are two transitions at the core of this rite of passage. There is the daughter's own pursuit of her intellectual aspirations, her own sense of voice, and her identity as a woman. On the other hand, there also occurs the mother's personal transition from being the reassuring daily presence, the teacher of values, and the more powerful woman in the household into something else.”

The article provides parents with helpful suggestions to encourage young women to become more independent, as well as ways for mothers and fathers to embrace the new opportunities that arise with this unique transition in family dynamics. For more information, go to http://www.parentsleague.org/.
