Rye Neck Students Earn Their
Place at Tri-County Science Fair
F.E. Bellows' recent Science Expo showcased projects by second, third and fourth graders. “The students participate because they love science,” said Principal Marge Longabucco.
The elementary school's 12th annual science fair, March 3, was once again co-chaired by Longabucco, as well as parents and scientists Kathy Last Barney and Marc Karell. This year, there were 104 participants, who explored everything from the human heart and spiders' webs to electromagnets and friction.
Fourth graders Bram Wollowitz, David Jackson, Genevieve Sambrook, Andrew Galstian, Pascale Eenkema van Dijk, Aidan Spencer, Issei Harada and Jake Welty will be heading to the Tri-County Science Fair at JFK High School in Somers April 21.
Their projects were deemed outstanding by professionals in the scientific community. They were judged on the merits of their hypothesis, experimental procedures, data interpretations, visual displays and oral presentations.
The second and third graders also had the opportunity to present their findings to the district's science research teacher, Nora Leonard, Rye Neck Superintendent Peter Mustich, Rye Neck's board members and high school students.
“The Science Expo is a wonderful enrichment opportunity that enhances the home-school partnership,” said Longabucco. “It's wonderful to see the excitement of the children participating not because they have to, but because they want to.”
