An exhibit on “Rye and the Roaring 20s: A Time for Change” opens Sunday, March 25, 4 to 6 p.m. at the Square House. Drawn largely from the Historical Society’s collection, the exhibit explores the societal changes that took place in this tumultuous decade. Items from the society’s costume collection will be prominently featured along with commentary about the changing roles of women and their greater freedoms.
In the 20s, the concept of leisure time went through enormous change with the increased use of the automobile and the advent of radio, and in Rye, the opening of Playland. The exhibit also traces the effects of Prohibition and the growth of social organizations.
The exhibit will run until Aug. 15. For more information, call 967-7588 or visit www.ryehistoricalsociety.org.
An exhibit entitled “The Window Within,” consisting of colorful, light-filled acrylic paintings of flowers, country scenes and interior spaces by Susan Pascale, will be on display at the library from April 3 through May 11. A reception will be held Thursday, April 12, 7 to 9 p.m. For more information, call 231-3161 or visit www.RyeLibrary.org.
Where were the horses tied up in downtown Rye? Where did George Washington spend the night? Where did the trolley run? Where would performers sing down to crowds on the street?
Take a quick tour of historic downtown Rye on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month this spring and learn more about it. The Rye Historical Society educator will lead the tours and show visitors historic photographs of Rye’s earlier days.
