It didn’t take long for Rye Country Day to wash the taste of February 27’s loss to Holy Child in the FAA girls’ basketball championship out of their mouths.

Saunders Has the Golden Touch at Junior Olympics

Cornelius Saunders, a junior at Rye High School, won a gold medal for Cadet Epée in the Junior Olympic Championships held Feb. 14-16 in Albuquerque, N.M. His win, over 202 other entrants, cements the third place he achieved in Cadet Epée last year at Summer Nationals in San Diego.

The Rye Rangers Hockey Club sent over 50 players, ages 7-14, to Marlborough, Mass., to play in the March Classic Tournament at the New England Sports Center.

Rye’s dream season came to an end February 28 at the County Center. The third-seeded Garnets were ousted 57-42 by No. 2 Lakeland in the Section 1 Class A semifinals, but they did not hang their heads.

Over 100 Rye Middle School students put on a full-court press for the American Heart Association in, “Hoops for Hearts” March 4.

Resurrection CYO’s Fast Break Against Hunger

On February 28, Resurrection’s CYO coordinators ran an all-day basketball event for the Hoops for Hunger Campaign, which provides funds for the Catholic Charities Emergency Food Program.

Raise High the Beams, Y Gymnasts
The Rye YMCA Gymnastics Team returned from the YMCA League Championships with a number of trophies and medals. Over 70 gymnasts competed in the March 1 competition held at the Lakewood Trumbull YMCA.

Rye’s boys’ swim team surfaced as a top squad at the exhilarating State championships, March 6-7 at the Nassau Aquatic Center in East Meadow, Long Island.

Garnets Relinquish Section Crown in Finale at West Point


All signs indicated a third consecutive Division II Section championship was within reach for Rye’s top-seeded ice hockey team after two periods of play at Tate Rink in West Point March 3. The Garnets – winners of 10 of 11 contests entering the final – were up 1-0 and had nearly twice as many shots on goal (32-18) as did second-seeded Pelham.

Garnets’ Goalie Benincasa Named Lions Club Athlete of the Month

The Lions Club has tabbed Matt Benincasa, a senior captain and starting goaltender for Rye High School’s ice hockey team, as February’s Athlete of the Month.

Reid Secondo Sails to a Great Finish in Class 1 Regatta
Reid Secondo, a ninth grader at Rye Country Day School, traveled to Clearwater Beach, Fla., to participate in the Laser Midwinter’s East Regatta February 19-22.
