Reduced Hours at The Rye Library

Right after the New Year, Kurt Hadeler, Director of the Rye Free Reading Room, announced that owing to the current economic crisis and the reduction in funding from the City, the library would be open fewer hours in 2009. “We had few options but to scale back on new book and AV purchases or reduce the number of hours we are open each week,” he wrote the community. In the end, the library made carefully chosen cuts in both areas.

After Hadeler and staff analyzed use during 2008, the board agreed to a new schedule for 2009, effective January 1. The library is now open Monday and Wednesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is closed on Sunday.

The library board plans to discuss restoring some hours at its January 15 meeting, post deadline. “We're hoping to keep the library open more hours than we announced at the beginning of the month. While the end result might not be many more hours, we are trying to get Sundays back in the mix.”
