Martin Luther King Jr. Day
The Bruce Museum is open all day to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This year’s theme, “Celebrating a Life of Love,” features special performances by the Messiah Baptist Gospel Choir from Bridgeport, at 11 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. Students of all ages and abilities will have the opportunity to make “I have a dream …” buttons and add their self-portraits to the Circle of Friends mural, as well as explore the museum’s galleries and exhibitions. All events are free with museum admission.
The museum’s youth volunteers will honor Dr. King as a part of the national King Day of Service initiated by the U.S. Congress in 1994. This year, youth volunteers will assist with special activities to commemorate this national holiday.

Play With Your Food
The Greenwich Arts Council presents its popular lunchtime play-reading series “Play With Your Food” at noon. A gourmet buffet lunch from Garelick and Herbs will be served in the galleries, followed by readings of award-winning one-act plays by talented actors in the recital hall. A brief conversation with the cast will follow the performance.

Chinese New Year Splendor
The Divine Performing Arts' Chinese New Year Splendor comes to The Performing Arts Center, Purchase College as part of its 2009 world tour – for two shows only at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Over 100 of the world's foremost and classically-trained Chinese dancers, singers and musicians will perform in one unforgettable show. Modern Sculpture Masterpieces
“Innovations in the Third Dimension: Sculpture of Our Time” opens today at the Bruce Museum. The exhibit showcases over 40 masterpieces of modern sculpture and addresses how ideas about the medium, size, presentation, patronage, and techniques of sculpture in the 20th and 21st centuries have created exciting and startling new possibilities.
The exhibition, which runs through May 24, features notable examples of sculpture, from Rodin to Archipenko and Calder through Louise Nevelson, Henry Moore and others. More recent, cutting-edge sculptures by Jeff Koons, Folkert de Jong, Do Ho Suh, and Sue Webster and Tim Noble are also on view.

Having a Mime of a Time
Michael Cooper brings his acclaimed show, "Masked Marvels & Wondertales" to The Performing Arts Center, Purchase College at 3 p.m. Cooper is an extraordinary visual artist and mime whose one-man extravaganza combines creative handcrafted masks, original stories of courage and wonder, stilt dancing and a physical repertoire that ranges from the madcap to the sublime.

Hail to the Chiefs
The John Jay Homestead in Katonah will host an impressive lecture series exploring the legacies of U.S. Presidents Jackson, Lincoln and Jefferson. On Jan. 28, Professor David S. Reynolds will read from and discuss his most recent book, "Waking Giant: America in the Age of Jackson." Learn of the changes that America underwent in the first half of the 19th century as the era of “Founding Fathers” ended and the tremendous growth of our young country began.

Soaring Satire
The Manhattanville College Departments of Music and Dance & Theatre present Leonard Bernstein's "Candide". Performances are January 29, 30 and 31 at 8 p.m., and Saturday, January 31 and February 1 at 2 p.m. in the college’s Little Theatre.
Based on Voltaire's satirical masterpiece, "Candide" follows the journey of a young man who is determined to follow his tutor's philosophy of absolute optimism.

Flora and Fauna
The Bendheim Gallery of the Greenwich Arts Council presents two new art exhibitions, on display through January 31. "Landscapes" from Frank Murlo is a series of landscape paintings inspired by the Hamptons, where the artist spends his summers. Murlo's work is regarded as engaging and inviting, "a studied meditation on light and shadow."
Also featured is David Webber's "Animals," a photography exhibit of wild animals in their natural environments. Webber provides up-close and personal portraits of some ferocious animals, none too shy to pose for this photo safari.
