Garnets Weather the Storm at Two Tournaments
As the snow fell outside, Rye’s wrestlers plowed through the opposition inside at a pair of road tournaments January 10. Four of the Garnets’ five wrestlers who participated in the Scarsdale Tournament placed in the top six, and their younger teammates proved their mettle in limited action at the Hastings Tournament, which was cut short due to inclement weather.
“This was a great weekend as all the wrestlers were in action at the two different tournaments,” said head coach Matt Beckley. “The kids have been working hard and their success has been evidenced in their numerous accomplishments. We’re starting our push towards the postseason in February.”
At Scarsdale, Graham Zahringer (135-pound weight class) and Eamon Marley (189) both reached the finals and showed they are among the elite in Section 1. Donovan McSorley rebounded from a tough opening-round loss with three straight wins to place fifth, and Steven Fisher finished sixth in the 285-pound class despite weighing just 219 pounds.
Peter Kennedy, Will Florio, Jake Concavage, Jeff Dempsey and Peter Julian were among some of the top performers at Hastings. The tournament was not completed, but the team fared well in the early rounds.
