Patrick O’Callaghan Named
Lions Club Athlete of the Month

One of four senior captains and an all-around vital cog on Rye’s 2007 and 2008 State championship football teams, Patrick O’Callaghan was named Lions Club Athlete of the Month in December.

O’Callaghan was one of only two players to start on both defense and offense for the Garnets in 2008. Like the Steelers’ Kordell Stewart in the 1990s, O’Callaghan could have been nicknamed “Slash” by his Rye teammates. He was a wingback/safety/punt and kickoff returner/holder. Basically, he did whatever head coach Dino Garr asked of him. For his exceptional efforts O’Callaghan was tabbed All-Section and All-County Honorable Mention, and was the recipient of the Christopher Mello Award and the Rye-Harrison Rotary Sportsmanship Award.

The talented O’Callaghan is also a standout on the basketball court and lacrosse field. Even more impressive are his achievements in the classroom. O’Callaghan has a steady 89 GPA, and is a member of the National Honor Society. He’s also a Rye High School Scholar who has taken nine Honors classes and four Advanced Placement courses.

In addition to playing three sports and devoting time to studies, the senior serves as the Co-president of Student Awareness and is a member of Adopt-a-Grandfriend.
O’Callaghan was recently accepted into Middlebury College in Burlington, Vt., where he will play both football and lacrosse.
